“You can respawn, bro. That guy died like fifty times and respawned. So annoying.”

“Respawning won’t do anything for him. He sucks anyway!”

A roar of male laughter rocks the diner following the long-haired kid’s smug rebuff.

Three tables, twelve chairs, four pizzas– loaded- five burgers, chicken fingers, too many spilling cups of fries, seven milkshakes, three sodas, two iced-teas, buffalo wings, fifteen slices of various pies and cakes, club sandwiches, and a stray onion ring make up the after-party at Love’s. There’s so much food, Bob almost had to do an emergency stockroom run.

Nine of Rome’s friends showed up, laden with teenage hormones and goofy trash talk. The seven boys unashamedly outtalk the three girls. Cara and I are at one end of the long setup but mentally at the other side of the world. A few minutes after being surrounded by juvenile antics, Cara leaned over to me and whispered, “I don’t think I missed much not having gone to high school.”

I’ve never seen so much food eaten so quickly. At one point I asked for someone to pass the ketchup, and by the time it went through five hands and finally got to me, the fries were mostly gone along with the sauce.

Meaty fingers happily clasped over his aproned belly, Bob is beside himself with approval. He just loves it when his customers are having a good time, never mind we’ve pretty much taken over the acoustics of the place.

“Hey, Rome,” one of the girls calls out from down the long table. “Did you hear there was, like, an agent or producer at the show?”

“No way,” a dark-haired boy throws out as Rome’s eyes widen over his burger. “Where’d you hear that?”

“Ms. Chao. She recognized the lady– I think she said Beverly… something or another– sitting way in the back. Incognito-like, you know?”

“Please, girl, no producer or agent is going to know about our little high school production.”

Was that Colin’s doing? The boy is right. How would someone in the industry know about a rinky-dink school play among hundreds in the city?

She throws a fry at him. “That’s what she said. I’m just telling you guys what she said, asshole. Can we get a refill?”

Seeing it’s understaffed with only Ahmad and Jenny on a bustling Friday night, Cara jumps up, dons on the half-apron, and starts busting tables.

Bob scowls at her. “Sit your skinny butt down, girlie. We got this.”

“Who’s we?” retorts Jenny as she hustles to refill our tables yet again, sending a wink in Rome’s direction. “Don’t listen to Bob, Cara. The fried onions got to him again.”

“I don’t mind, Bob,” Cara calls out, scooping dirty dishes into a bin. “It’s just a few tables. We don’t want customers waiting if there are tables we can turn.”

Before I know it, Rome is up and next to Cara, his hands as quick as I’ve ever seen as he starts stacking leftover plates with her. That elicits a rowdy round of catcalls and wolf whistles from our table.
